chapter 5 summary
Chapter 5 is a very significant chapter in the novel as Gatsby's and Daisy's relationship pivotal. The chapter begins with Nick agreeing to Gatsby's plan. Gatsby had the intention of Nick inviting Daisy over to Nick's house for tea, so that Daisy would attend without knowing that he will be there. In Gatsby's mind this was the beginning of him achieving his dream in reuniting with Daisy. It is the first time in five years that Gatsby has seen Daisy. The day starts of rainy and as Daisy arrives Gatsby becomes anxious.The meeting is initially silent and awkward, Gatsby becomes regretful of the meeting. He excuses himself to see Nick in the kitchen. Upon confronting Nick with his fears, Nick reassures him that this meeting is not a mistake, and Gatsby returns to the other room to be with Daisy. Nick eventually leaves his house, leaving Daisy and Gatsby alone. After a period of time, Nick returns home to find Gatsby "glowing", seemingly rekindling his connection with Daisy.
Gatsby invites Daisy and Nick to his home to give them a tour. To his pleasure, Daisy is delighted at the splendour of his home. She expresses happiness at all of its extravagance across the various rooms. Gatsby is pleased because the internal purpose in having this extravagant house was to impress her. They look out of a window watching the green light from Daisy's deck across the bay, Gatsby feeling that this symbol of hope is no longer significant since he now has her so close. While music played, Nick left Gatsby's house, leaving Gatsby and Daisy alone together in their blissful and intimate moment.
